Abdi Asbaghi, a painter and visual artist, was born on December 11, 1956, in Tehran. He initially pursued his studies in mathematics, but his deepening interest in art eventually led him to follow painting seriously. His early training took place under the guidance of Aydin Aghdashloo, after which he continued learning painting and art history at Zangar Studio. These formative experiences laid the foundation for his distinctive visual approach and unique artistic signature. Over more than three decades of professional activity, Asbaghi has earned a prominent place among contemporary Iranian painters, thanks to his unique style and poetic worldview. His works are often created using acrylic on canvas, incorporating materials such as paper, fabric, and newspaper—elements that, in his eyes, serve not merely as visual components but as carriers of personal and collective memory and history. The core theme of his art can be traced to a sense of nostalgia and references to the cultural and social memory of Iranians. His paintings, through layers of concealment, metaphor, and ambiguity, engage deeply with identity and collective memory within Iranian society. He held his first solo exhibition in 1991 at Seihoun Gallery, and since then, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Iran and abroad, including in Germany, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Singapore. His works are housed in prominent collections such as the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Niavaran Cultural Center, Roudaki Foundation, and various respected private collections. Asbaghi is a permanent member of the Iranian Painters Association and an honorary member of the Institute for Promotion of Contemporary Visual Arts. In recent years, his works have been showcased in prominent galleries such as Golestan, Schiller (Berlin), Artibition, and Shirin. His most recent notable project was an exhibition titled “Allusion and Ambiguity” at Artibition Gallery. Abdi Asbaghi continues to explore and recreate visual narratives from historical, cultural, and aesthetic perspectives. He remains among the artists who have, in a creative and contemplative manner, preserved the connection between past and present within the frame of painting.
