Ardeshir Mohasses

Ardeshir Mohasses

Ardeshir Mohasses is a cartoonist born in Rasht in 1938. She received a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Tehran in 1962. However, after her cartoons were published in publications, she turned to art professionally. In the years before the revolution, in addition to the press, he also published several books of his works. After publishing his drawings in several reputable publications in America, he left Iran for this country in 1975 and lived in America for the rest of his life. From the beginning of his career in the late 1930s, Ardeshir Mohasses went against the conventional trend of cartoonists of that era to address bitter and dark social and political issues. He began a new step in the direction of caricature and press. The detailed drawings are mostly executed on a simple background and criticize injustice. Few works of this artist are in color. He is known for his powerful lines, usually with black and white drawings, and he has also created color works with the same power. He has always had the concern of society in mind and has practiced expressing it to society. Many of his works have been exhibited in major exhibitions in Iran and abroad, and his works have also been sold at auction. His unique style shows both the influence of designers such as Roland Topour and traces of older traditions in Iran. Nikzad Nojomi points out the influence of coffeehouse painting on his works. He was skilled in depicting collapsed figures, and his works can be described as grotesque. His fame increased after his death, as several exhibitions of his works were held and several books were published about him. Ardeshir Mohasses finally died in New York in 2008.
