Behrooz Darash

Behrouz Darsh is an Assyrian sculptor, born in 1942 in Urmia, Iran. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Tehran School of Commerce and a master’s degree in International Economics from the University of Tehran. Darsh’s first encounter with sculpture came through his artistic training under Victoria Darsh, one of the sculpture instructors at the Faculty of Fine Arts. Having been acquainted with music from adolescence—playing the cello and classical guitar—he moved to Spain after completing his master’s degree, where he pursued music seriously and collaborated with prominent masters of classical and flamenco music. After returning to Iran, Darsh engaged in study and research on new forms and spatial concepts in the visual arts. The outcome of this period was the creation of works that were presented in several experimental group exhibitions in Iran between 1974 and 1977. His artistic activity came to a halt following the 1979 Revolution and the increasing restrictions on cultural and artistic fields. Eventually, in 1988, after emigrating to Germany, he held his first solo exhibition. Darsh’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions and art events and have received many awards. His artistic record includes being a selected artist at the Toyomura International Sculpture Biennial in Japan in 1993, winning the Special Prize of the same biennial in 1996; being a selected artist at the International Exhibition of Sacred Art in Paris, France; a selected artist at the Rambouillet International Sculpture Biennial in France; winning awards at the Second and Fourth Iranian Sculpture Biennials in 1999; and participation in the Venice Biennale in 2003.
