Gohar Dashti (b. 1980, Ahvaz, Iran) is a photographer and video artist. She holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in Photography from the University of Art, Tehran. Dashti began her professional practice in the early 2000s and held her first solo exhibition in 2006 at Silk Road Gallery in Tehran. Her works are primarily staged, large-scale photographs that employ a conceptual and narrative approach to reflect on lived experience, contemporary history, and the social and cultural transformations of Iran. Her early practice was profoundly shaped by her lived experience of the Iran–Iraq War, which is explicitly reflected in series such as Today’s Life and War. Since the mid-2010s, her practice has expanded toward re-examining nature and its relationship to human presence and geography. In series such as Home, Untitled (Rootless), and Land(s), Dashti adopts a poetic and metaphorical visual language to address themes of migration, identity, and the transformation of landscape. Her works have been exhibited in major museums and galleries internationally.
