Hakop Vartanian

Hakop Vartanian, an Iranian painter of Armenian descent and a significant figure in watercolor art, was born in Tehran in 1282. He completed his education at the Armenian School of Tehran and graduated with honors in 1299. Vartanian began his professional career as a teacher in New Julfa, Isfahan, and Tehran, while simultaneously pursuing painting with dedication. In the following decades, although economic circumstances led him to work for many years in accounting and later at the oil company, he maintained a continuous engagement with art. During this period, he worked at the “Mani” studio alongside artists such as Markar Gharabegian and André Sorogine. After retiring in 1321, he returned fully to painting, creating notable works in watercolor and oil. His artworks were exhibited at Aftab Gallery, the Iran–America Cultural Association, Yadha va Khaterat Gallery, Sullivan Gallery, and the Armenian Museum of Contemporary Art. Works by Vartanian are also held in the collections of the Islamic Consultative Assembly Museum and the Kerman Museum. Hakop Vartanian passed away in Tehran in 1362.
