Hossein Mahjoobi

Hossein Mahjoobi

Hossein Mahjoubi, the renowned Iranian painter and architect, was born in 1930 in Lahijan, Iran. He developed a passion for painting from an early age. In 1950, thanks to the support of Dr. Mohammad-Ali Mojtahedi, he moved to Tehran to continue his education at Alborz High School. In 1959, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran with a degree in painting and simultaneously completed coursework in architecture. Even before completing his studies, Mahjoubi won first prize at the Iran-America Society group exhibition in 1956, marking the beginning of his professional artistic career. Over the years, he held more than 90 solo exhibitions across Iran, Europe, the United States, Africa, and Asia, and participated in hundreds of group shows. His contributions to architecture are also noteworthy. In 1963, he designed the iconic Saei Park in Tehran and later supervised the development of several major urban parks, including Mellat, Laleh, Niavaran, Jamshidieh, Shafagh, Khazaneh, and the first desert parks in Iran. Mahjoubi’s artistic style is poetic, imaginative, and nature-oriented, earning him the title “Painter of Paradise.” In 1978, he was nominated for the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for his illustrations in the book The Legend of Rain. In 2018, he received the “Art for Peace” Honorary Award. In 2021, to mark his 91st birthday, a dedicated gallery of his works was inaugurated at the Negarestan Garden Museum, and a street in Tehran was named in his honor.
