Kiumars Harpa is an Iranian painter born in 1957 in Tehran. He began painting seriously in 1972 and, following the Cultural Revolution, was admitted to the University of Art in 1983. Among his prominent professors during his studies were Mohammad Ebrahim Jafari, Mehdi Hosseini, Bahman Boroujeni, and Iraj Zand. Harpa’s distinctive and unique style can be described as a form of grotesque, in which one can trace the influence of Marc Chagall. During the second half of the 2010s, he became one of the most renowned contemporary painters in Iran. His solo exhibition in 2019 at Sarban Gallery, titled “Faded Memories”, quickly brought his name into wide recognition. In addition to painting, Harpa has also worked in sculpture, where his highly personal approach to form and volume has produced remarkable works. His use of ancient tree roots combined with thin metal wire resulted in a series of sculptures unlike anything typically seen in contemporary Iranian sculpture.
