Kourosh Shishegaran is a contemporary painter, graphic designer, and printmaker, born in 1945 in Qazvin, Iran. He is best known for his linear abstract paintings and is recognized as an experimental artist who has explored various mediums throughout his professional career. Shishegaran received a diploma in painting from Tehran School of Fine Arts and studied interior architecture at the Faculty of Decorative Arts. In his first professional exhibition held in 1972 at Mas Gallery in Tehran, he demonstrated his architectural sensibility in the presentation of his works. Rather than selling them, he gifted all 42 exhibited works to ordinary people and public institutions. He believed that painting should be brought to the people, not that we wait for them to come to it. Shishegaran’s first international exhibition took place in Basel, Switzerland, in 1976. In this collection, he reinterpreted works by prominent Iranian and international artists using his own techniques and mode of expression. In his renowned abstract paintings, Shishegaran is more committed to painting itself than to political or social issues. His approach to tangled lines and graphic brushstrokes recalls the work of Roy Lichtenstein. These lines are less painterly and more of a graphic interpretation of the painterly element. In some of his works, the intricate and chaotic flow of lines evokes the silhouette of a human figure or lifeless body, moving from pure abstraction toward figurative suggestion.
