Mehdi Hosseini, a painter, was born in 1943 in Kashan. During his teenage years, he moved to Tehran with his family. After completing his studies at the Tehran School of Fine Arts, he traveled to the United States to pursue painting and printmaking. In 1969, he received his bachelor’s degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1971 he continued his graduate studies at the Pratt Institute in New York. After returning to Iran, Hosseini began teaching at the University of Art and retired in the 2010s with the rank of professor. He held his first solo exhibition in 1974 at Tehran Gallery and subsequently collaborated with numerous galleries, including Zervan, Golestan, Sabz, Aria, Mah, Haft Samar, Her, Khak, and Vista. Hosseini is an artist who works in both drawing and painting. His drawings possess a tragic and timeless quality; however, this sense of tragedy lies not in their subject matter but in the dramatic situations in which his figures are placed. His images merge so seamlessly with the fluid space surrounding them that it seems as though this fluidity—of thought and matter combined—has given rise to the forms themselves. The atmosphere of Hosseini’s drawings conveys a kind of anticipatory awareness, foretelling human suffering. Through drawing, he seeks to give an organic form to a weary and afflicted spirit; yet the human figure that emerges becomes an image reduced repeatedly to an abstract identity. The subject of Hosseini’s paintings, meanwhile, often centers on scenes of everyday life and the objects that contemporary individuals inevitably encounter around them.
