Faramarz Pilaram, a prominent figure in Iran’s neo-traditionalist art movement, was born in 1936 in Tehran. He was one of the pioneers of the Saqqakhaneh School and calligraphic painting. Pilaram began his education at the Tehran School of Fine Arts and continued his studies at the Faculty of Decorative Arts at the University of Tehran, earning a master’s degree in Interior Architecture and Decorative Painting. After studying in France, he played a significant role in establishing the Iran Gallery (Ghandriz Gallery) and the Free Group of Painters and Sculptors. His early works featured religious symbols and stamping techniques, but he gradually gravitated toward calligraphic painting, presenting Persian calligraphy in innovative visual forms. He was among the first artists to combine the Nasta’liq script with the visual language of painting and explored contemporary artistic experimentation by creating three-dimensional wooden sculptures with Persian letters. Throughout his career, Pilaram participated in numerous exhibitions in Iran and abroad, including France, Monaco, New York, Washington, Turin, Milan, and Basel. He held more than ten solo exhibitions and took part in important group exhibitions such as the Tehran Biennial, Mes Gallery, Ganj o Gostareh exhibitions, Abi, and Wash Art in the USA. One of his works was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. He also received several awards, including honors from the Tehran Biennial. Pilaram passed away in August 1983.
