Homayoun Salimi, a painter, was born in 1948 in Tehran. He studied at the Mirak School of Fine Arts and later went to France. In France, he completed a bachelor's degree in painting at the École des Beaux-Arts. He then received a master's degree in aesthetics from the University of Sorbonne in 1981 and earned a PhD in the same field in 1990. After returning to Iran, Salimi joined the faculty of the University of Art (School of Decorative Arts). He held his first solo exhibition in 1985 at the Niavaran Cultural Center. Salimi has repeatedly exhibited his works individually and in group shows both inside and outside the country. In his early paintings, Salimi was influenced by Persian miniature painting. From the late 1970s, he turned to a form of geometric abstraction inspired by elements of traditional architecture. His compositions, usually monochromatic, featured small and large squares arranged horizontally and vertically, a style that he also employed in his collages. In his later paintings, Salimi focused on the regular repetition of geometric motifs (stars, diamonds, hexagons, etc.) across layers of diverse colors. With mastery of acrylic paint techniques, he executed his works through a process of layering, washing, and polishing, making use of accidental effects in his pieces. Another of Salimi’s interests is cultivating miniature trees (bonsai), reflecting his inclination toward Zen philosophy, an art form he became familiar with during his studies in France. In these works, titled “Green Volume”, he harmoniously combines small stones with the forms of the trees, evoking landscapes reminiscent of traditional Chinese painting.
