Morteza Darehbaghi is a painter born in 1969 in Tehran. He began painting seriously at the age of fifteen, graduated from the Tehran School of Fine Arts, and received his bachelor’s degree in painting from the Faculty of Art and Architecture at Islamic Azad University, Tehran. In 1993, Darehbaghi won first place at the Student Biennial of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, and in the same year held his first solo exhibition at Classic Gallery in Isfahan. In 2004, he won first place at the Biennial of the Islamic World. Later, in 2011, he participated in the 54th Venice Biennale with a conceptual work titled Light and Peace. After completing his academic training in Tehran, Morteza Darehbaghi spent seven years working outside Iran, devoting this period to exploration and discovery within modern art. He has held numerous exhibitions both inside and outside Iran. Throughout his artistic career, Darehbaghi has experimented with various styles. His early works contain figurative elements influenced by Iranian painting, while his later works have moved toward abstraction. However, they are not fully abstract, and forms and plant-like patterns reminiscent of Iranian miniature painting are still evident. His works are rooted in Iran’s traditional art, as he himself states: “The history of art in Iran is a brilliant history that, unfortunately, we have not paid much attention to. These roots of traditional art appeared in shining forms from the Safavid period, and up to the Qajar era you can see numerous motifs and patterns created with great artistry. I am very interested in these motifs, and they usually find their way into my works.”
