Manouchehr Safarzadeh (1943–2023) was a painter born in Tehran. In 1961, he received his diploma in Painting from the School of Fine Arts. He was among the first students at the Faculty of Decorative Arts, but did not complete his studies there. In the 1960s, Safarzadeh held his first solo exhibitions at Gilgamesh Gallery and Ghandriz Hall. During part of his artistic career, he developed a strange and metaphorical world through human figures, imaginative creatures, and urban spaces characterized by a muted atmosphere. In later periods, a re-examination of his earlier experiences and reflections on the nature of painting led him to expand his visual language. His works brought together photographs, people, objects, landscapes, and, at times, references to art history. In 1996, Safarzadeh moved to Germany, where he lived until 2004. During this period, alongside drawing and painting, he continued his studies and research in art, and an exhibition of his works was held at the Düren City Museum. From Iranian narrative traditions, he drew on flat spatial composition, the prominence of the figure, and the unconventional organization of scale; from European modernism, he adopted the freedom to transform form and psychological expression. Manouchehr Safarzadeh passed away in 2023.
