About the Artwork
MarmarMeta Culture is inspired by the Saqqakhaneh School, an art movement born in 20th-century Iran during a period of tension between tradition and modernity. This movement drew heavily on the forms and symbols of street-side saqqakhanehs—small shrines where people would offer their wishes and prayers, deeply rooted in inherited beliefs. These spaces represented a collective faith, often shaped by generational repetition rather than logic, blending spirituality with the cultural fabric of everyday life. However, as modernity and technology entered the scene, these inherited beliefs faced a profound challenge, forcing individuals to question whether these stories held truth or were simply constructs of their ancestors’ imaginations—a means of seeking comfort in solitude. The Saqqakhaneh School bridged this gap by preserving the essence of cultural identity while embracing innovation, proving that tradition and progress could coexist. At Meta Culture, we seek to revive this philosophy for our contemporary world, where the forms and meanings of the past inspire new narratives. By weaving history, creativity, and modernity, we aim to shape a future that honors its roots while embracing transformation.
