Metamorphosis
About the Artwork
Time is the narrative of decline. In the end, it erodes everything and transformation becomes pervasive. Not in a physical way, but in the manner of a struggle doomed to failure: the recovery of a memory, the grasping of something that has been lost forever. The faces bear witness to this battle; faces that seem to be immersed in a vortex, like the traces of faded visages resembling a butterfly metamorphosis, wandering beside the stair-totems, imprisoned within the frame of oblivion. These faces, imprisoned in decline, seek something in their everyday existence; these seemingly silent and motionless faces are engaged in an eternal struggle. Their gaze calls upon us for help. Are they not familiar? Do we not remember them? And from here, an ethereal veil begins, penetrating our souls and binding itself to every particle of our existence. What our gaze retains, instead of memory itself, more than anything else, is the imprint of those lines and patterns that fade into oblivion, in the refraction of that aspect which keeps memory coherent and frozen in its entirety. Thus, the essential question is not what we remember; the question concerns what has been forgotten.
