About the Artwork
In Bahareh Khodaei's installation, fish symbolize human existence. They are in a suspended state, as if fallen to the ground and struggling for survival. The fish traverse an uncertain space and time, caught between life and death. It doesn't seem like the artist intends to evoke a sense of pity. Instead, she places the viewer in a higher position, granting us a superior and obligatory perspective. In other words, in this installation, she represents human existence through the form of the fish and positions the human observer in the role of a capable yet passive onlooker who merely witnesses the wounding and struggle of smaller creatures.
