Metal, devoid of scent, undergoes a silent and eerie demise. It draws air molecules into the lungs of the observer noiselessly, gradually succumbing to rust and decay, all without capturing the interest of a passing fly or serving as a nesting ground for insects. It remains untransformed into a mere "carcass". This lack of odor in metal amplifies its demise, lending an air of mystery and purgatory to the automobile graveyard. Death, typically perceived as a weighty, damp, and grotesque presence, seems incongruous in this environment. One is unprepared for the solidity, neutrality, and inefficacy of the metal, which permits such close inspection. The atmosphere in the cemetery, unexpectedly dry and light, belies the usual expectations of death's heaviness.
